February update from the Commissioner
New opportunities for growth in 2023
28 February, 2023
It’s exciting to be starting the year with a new free service for small business. Winning Business is a fresh online course from the Commission which can help you create a more compelling business pitch when competing for a new contract. If you don’t know where to start in bidding for contracts or simply want to get better at selling your strengths, this might be a valuable resource to assist you.
Online retailing has been of growing importance to NSW small businesses, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when consumers were stuck at home. Businesses, however, are highly reliant on a relatively small number of global platforms to trade their wares. We think small businesses should have better safeguards when using these platforms and easier redress when something goes wrong. We have assisted a number of businesses over the years who have found communication with some of these platforms very challenging. The Commission has set out its thoughts on this topic in a submission to the current ACCC inquiry.
A reminder that a new regulation under the Retail Leases Act has been in effect since 1 January 2023. This regulation gives greater certainty for gyms and small bars about their inclusion in the Act, regardless of the type of premises they may rent.
Finally, I’m pleased to confirm that NSW Small Business Month returns in 2023, this year in October. Head to smallbusinessmonth.nsw.gov.au to sign up to the newsletter and get all the new on grants, partnerships and events. You’ll also find highlights from the 2022 events to inspire you.
