A new guide from the NSW Small Business Commissioner helps councils create a supportive economic and regulatory environment for their local small businesses.

Supporting your small business community: a guide for local councils provides practical advice and information for the 128 local councils across NSW to help them implement small business-friendly policies and processes, such as efficient handling of development applications.

The guide also has a wealth of ideas for councils on how they can energise their small business community with events and marketing campaigns.

NSW Small Business Commissioner Chris Lamont said the role of local councils was vital in helping small businesses thrive.

“The new guide for councils has been developed to provide practical support and assistance to better understand the needs of small businesses,” Mr Lamont said.

“Councils can support their local small businesses by ensuring council policies and processes are efficient, transparent and responsive to business needs. Good communication channels between councils and the business community are also key.

“The guide also shows councils how they can open up new business opportunities for their small businesses by making it easier for them to tender for local government work.”

The guide can be downloaded from the NSW Small Business Commissioner’s website.
