Northern Rivers is open for business

15 April, 2025

In April, the NSW Small Business Commission visited the Northern Rivers to meet with small business owners, local chambers, industry associations and council representatives across Tweed Heads, Lismore, Ballina, Byron Bay and Murwillumbah. The visit focused on listening to local perspectives and better understanding the impacts of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred on the small business community.

While in the region, the team saw firsthand the spectacular hinterland, local producers and small business communities that contribute to the vibrancy of the Northern Rivers. Small business owners demonstrated their resilience and determination to keep their businesses operating through what have been challenging conditions.

As in many communities across the state, small businesses play a vital role in supporting the local economy, jobs and tourism. With the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends approaching, local producers, cafes, artists, retailers and tourism operators have come together to share a clear and united message: the Northern Rivers is open for business.

Recent weather events offer a timely reminder to prepare for the unexpected, as business interruptions can occur at any time.

The NSW Small Business Commission offers practical guidance and support for businesses affected by natural disasters and other unplanned interruptions. For more information, visit https://www.smallbusiness.nsw.gov.au/help/common-questions/get-ready-for-disasters
