November update from the Commissioner

Small Business Month and Retail Leases Act Review

21 November, 2022

Happy Small Business Month.  After the last two years, in particular, it is more than appropriate that we come together to support and congratulate small businesses across NSW.  Despite continuing challenges, there is a tremendous positivity and entrepreneurial spirit among attendees.

We’ve now reached more than 500 events in total and there are still more than 200 events on offer during the final week. I encourage you to attend one of the remaining “Connect for Success” events

The Commission has been asked by the NSW Government to conduct a review of the NSW Retail Leases Act. The last significant amendments to the Act were made in 2017.

The views of small business tenants, landlords and other stakeholders will be important in ensuring good leasing practices.  It is expected the review will provide a renewed focus on improving business relationships between retail leasing tenants and landlords.

It is important the Retail Leases Act is clear, reflects industry expectations and promotes confidence across the business sector.

Have your say on the current Act and how it might be improved. The questionnaire is perhaps the easiest way to express a view, but you are also free to write a submission of any length and send it to us. Please send your response in by 9 December 2022.
