September update from the Commissioner

27 September, 2023

NSW Small Business Month is only a few days away! It is the largest small business event in Australia and a unique opportunity for small businesses across the State to get the answers they need to solve a business problem or get inspiration and advice on where to take the business next.

There are hundreds of events on offer over the next month, a mix of in person and online, so head to the Small Business Month website to search for an event in your area or on a topic that interests you.

Unfortunately, it looks like a potentially bad bushfire season this Summer, with an El Nino climate pattern recently being declared. I urge every small business to think about the risks and prepare for your business to possibly be impacted. Disasters come in all shapes and forms and even if you think you won’t be affected by bushfires, it simply makes good business sense to understand the risks to your particular operation and have an emergency plan. Something as simple as having a backup of your data, or an alternative place to store perishable inventory could determine whether your business survives.

The Commission has developed four guides to help you identify the risks to your business from disruption and disaster, build a tailored plan to manage the risks and help you deal with the aftermath, including managing insurance claims. Download them here.
