Two more weeks to apply for compulsory Director ID

Company directors now have until 14 December 2022

1 December, 2022

Company directors have been given a two-week extension to apply for a compulsory Director ID.

The Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) said it would not take compliance measures against directors as long as they applied by 14 December 2022.

All directors of companies, registered Australian bodies and registered foreign companies must apply for a director ID – it is not optional.

The ABRS estimated 700,000 of Australia’s 2.5 million directors had not yet applied.

If your small business is set up under a proprietary limited (“Pty Ltd”) structure then you are most likely a company director. Anyone else closely involved in your business – typically a spouse, sibling, or parent – could also be a director.

The director ID is a unique 15-digit identifier that directors will apply for once and keep forever. It is administered by ABRS, which is managed by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
