What to do if you disagree with your tax assessment

There is help available if you believe an error has been made

25 July, 2024

Small businesses have a range of options to review tax decisions if they believe there are errors or inaccuracies in their tax assessments.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) recently revamped its guidance for small businesses that dispute ATO decisions. This initiative follows consultations with the Small Business Stewardship Group (SBSG) and Small Business Commissioners earlier this year.

The updated web resources provide information on various aspects of disputing ATO decisions, including dispute resolution options.

Starting from 1 July 2024, the ATO will also pilot an expansion of the small business independent review process. This initiative will now encompass businesses with a turnover of less than $50 million, offering them an avenue to resolve disputes through an independent and transparent review process.
